Pierre Avenas, ancien élève de l'École polytechnique, ingénieur au corps des Mines, a été directeur de la recherche et du développement dans l'industrie chimique. S'intéressant également aux sciences naturelles, il a eu l'idée d'un travail étymologique et multilingue qui, en collaboration avec Henriette Walter, a abouti à L'Étonnante Histoire des noms de mammifères (2003) puis à La Mystérieuse Histoire des oiseaux (2007).
