    EXTRAIT
It was spring again, and Madeleine set out to pick wild mushrooms that grew on the hills overlooking La Ciotat. The terrain was rocky with pockets of moist soil tucked under the canopy of trees. She carried a wicker basket as she walked along the narrow forested area at the edge of a cliff that overlooked the sea. Mechanically she stopped and picked up another mushroom and placed it in the basket next to two round balls of dirt hiding black truffles. She raised the basket to her face and smelled the strong aroma, trying to focus on her tasks and enjoy a few moments away from the restaurant and the worried looks of her parents.
I just can't help it, she thought. I can't get Yves and those German pigs out of my mind. I have to do something. I can't hide and pick mushrooms for the rest of the war.
Madeleine stepped to the edge of the cliff and looked down into an inlet, knifing in from the sea, watching as a group of German soldiers lay on the beach drinking wine and splashing around in the cool azure water. A few families sat well apart from the men trying to enjoy the warmth of the beach and sun in the presence of their occupiers.

    EXTRAIT
Madeleine, John, and Jack sorted through several weapons John kept in an expanded storm shelter in his backyard. It had been renovated and expanded to accommodate several storage lockers and a gun range. Few people other than himself had ever seen the extent of the collection of firearms and explosives he kept in anticipation of some future event only he could foresee.
"I think it's prudent to be prepared with some automatic weapons and at least one sniper rifle," Madeleine advised.
John nodded. "I also think it would be best not to use American-made weapons in case we have to leave any behind. I'd rather not start an international incident, at least not one that looks like it was started by the US."
"We both worked with Russian weapons during the war," Jack said casually. "And I've kept current on the newer models."
    "How current?" John asked him.
"I'm semi-retired from MI6. Sort of a consultant, you might say." Jack glanced toward Madeleine.
"You and MI6 can have your `cold war,' Jack," Madeleine said.
"MI6 will pass on anything the CIA will give us and some of their own intel too, at least I hope so," John said.
"They better help. Jack is no longer in the field but learned many secrets during the war and the years after. That information is still valuable and classified. The Brits have a thing for old soldiers, John. It's about loyalty.

    Extrait
Then I got lost in my mathematics, counting the number of spermatozoa, at 200 million a jerk of… what a waste !
I almost stepped on some bum stretched across the sidewalk. At first, it looked like a hump of dirty linen. I first thought of going round him and walk away as fast as I could. I’m no Saint Martin, even if my second name is Martin. New York City doesn’t call for benevolence at this hour of the night. Guys usually cut your throat up rather than wait for you to give them half of your coat for your salvation.
Besides, it was summer and the guy certainly didn’t need a coat. But as I passed by the wretched heap, I stepped into something sticky and dark. It was blood. So, I thought, the sod was really in some kind of desperation.
    - Hey ! man, he mumbled as I bent down to look him over.
The filthy bundle was alive !
I knelt down to hear what he wanted to say.
    - It hurts…
I could have guessed it by myself. Blood mixed with a yellowish liquid flowed from his mouth as he pressed his hands on his stomach. The stuff was muffling the words he tried to articulate. I dialed 911 on my cell phone. A female voice at the other end of the night, told me to wait by the body, after I’d given her the location.
‘In your dreams’ I thought as I stood up to get out as fast as I could before the rescue team came. I wasn’t going to get mixed-up with anybody else’s problems. I had enough of my own to worry about. But before I could decide which direction to go to, some shade crawled over us for a prey, dancing circles around my newfound pal and me and filling the air with fumes.
    - Get the fuck off, I said to the ugly shadow reaching over the pavement, standing by my wounded mate. The hood looked menacing but cautiously stood away, his right hand in his back pocket ; probably holding on a knife or a razor or an improbable gun.
    - Hey man ! Don’t worry ! I don’t want nothin’, the putrid darker shade of night whined. Like, can I have a look, hey ? it don’t hurt to see, hey ! Hey ! Buddy ? Are you alone ? Hey ! Tell me… Tell me. What happened ? Did you just knife him ? Any money ?… Hey ! ?… How much you got ?
Finally getting up to my feet, I saw I was a good two feet taller than he was. The sort of guy who needs a footstool to piss in the sink.
    - Scram ! I said. Fuck off.
He grinned and something yellow barred the bottom of his face. He made a move toward me but before he could do anything, his head was caught in the rainbow like flashes of the white, blue and red ambulance’s revolving light sirening in and he vanished.

  • Malo is a disgraced police officer. Dismissed from an important murder case in his home city of Lot, he is sent to Madrid as a simple neighborhood inspector. There, he is assigned a case that he initially finds monotonous: investigating the harassment of foreign widows. Malo immerses himself in a passionate tour of the obscure labyrinth of the enormous city of Madrid that the endearing police commissioner, Bienzobas, calls the Great Fog. Malo in Madrid or the Case of the Polish Widow is one of the best examples of the literary work of Juan Pedro Aparicio. A novel that, with its fast pace, its ingenious humor and its subtle irony, traps the reader from the first to the last line.

  • Who could have guessed that Lucius Altreis, in his personal vendetta against the pope, would enlist neo-Nazis searching for $3 billion of Heinrich Himmler's gold submerged in an Austrian lake ? Who could have imagined his crusade would lead him to kidnap top airline executives gathered in Cannes, France ? Is hostility between two of these world-leading execs on the verge of sparking catastrophe ?
Altreis capitalizes on the rivalries and decadence of airline leaders to level an unprecedented threat against the Holy City.

  • Anglais The Oracle of the Moon

    Frédéric Lenoir

    • Versilio
    • 27 November 2014

The Monastery of Saint Giovanni in Venere, Italy, 1545. When terrified villagers deliver a practically lifeless body to Dom Salvatore, claiming that the man has been the victim of witchcraft, the monk transgresses the rules of the monastery in order to nurse the stranger back to health. However, within these safe cloisters, a series of tragic events unfold.
Someone is trying to kill the wounded stranger. Dom Salvatore must find out who this mysterious man is, if he is to have a chance of saving his life. Giovanni Tratore was born some three decades earlier to a peasant family in Calabria. He dutifully worked with his brother in the fields, but always dreamt of a greater life for himself. One day a ship bearing Venetian nobles is forced to anchor near his village, following a pirate attack.
The moment Giovanni sets eyes on Elena, the great granddaughter of the Doge, the most important man in Venice, he falls in love with her. An impossible love - how could a noble woman be interested in a peasant? - but Giovanni is not put off. From that moment on he resolves to do whatever it takes to make himself worthy of her love. Setting out for Venice, he soon meets Luna - a woman who can see into the future. When Luna reads his Oracle, Giovanni is terrified. "You will kill once through jealousy, once though fear and once through anger." Her words will haunt Giovanni throughout his life, as he tries to understand his fate, take control of it and even - when possible - side-step it.
Set against a 16th century rife with religious and political tensions, this novel take us from rural Calabria to the decadent palaces of Venice, from the secluded monasteries of Mount Athos to the prisons of Algiers, from the winding alleys of Jerusalem to the ghettos of Cyprus.
At once an epic love story, a compelling journey of initiation and a theological thriller of the most gripping kind, Frédéric Lenoir has succeeded in combining page-turning suspense with fascinating astrological, philosophical and religious insight in a novel that leaves you utterly bereft when you finish.
"Our very own Dan Brown... More than an epic historical thriller, this is a philosophical tale, written by a true scholar." - Le Journal du dimanche
"The intrigue is beautifully crafted and the love story keeps the reader in suspense until the very last page... A rip roaring read!' - Paris Match
"Look no further than The Oracle of the Moon for your weekend reading: love, adventure and intrigue set in the middle of the Renaissance - truly gripping... An extremely accessible history of religions with a twist of Dumas.' - RTL
