  • This essay sheds light on a relatively neglected 17th-century English thinker, Sir Thomas Browne; and rereads his works with modern lenses. It highlights his insightful contribution to modern thought. Browne is a man of the modern age. His legacy to modern thought clearly appears through his works. He raises the issue of the relationship between science and religion, and posits archeology and anthropology as disciplines that help better understand past, present, and future societies.

  • In the religious epoch of law and redemption the moral side of human nature prevailed and outweighed the aesthetic and cognitive side, argued Nikolai Berdyaev, the renowned Russian religious philosopher. The Christianity of law and redemption identified religious with the moral. However, asked Berdyaev, can the goal of sanctifi cation be reached by religious-aesthetic or religious-cognitive perfection? Can God refuse a person for his ugliness and want of knowledge if the person is morally perfect?
Can the person be refused because he does not create beauty or knowledge? Can a man be saved by great accomplishments in beauty and knowledge? For our eternal life, does God require only the moral person, or also the aesthete and the knower? But behind these questions there is a more fundamental dilemma: does God need the human person? Because if he does not then even the highest expressions of the human spirit count for little for him who is omnipotent and omniscient. The classical concept of the omnipotent deity allows only for one religious human activity, and that is the prayer for redemption. But if not even the best what we can create is good enough to exist in eternity, what is it that is "saved' from human nature?

  • Even if the words of a spiritual Master can be contained in books, paper books would never be enough for him. He is himself a living book, and he needs his disciples to become living books too. First of all, he writes on them; in their head and heart he sows the seeds of his Teaching in the hope that one day they will bear fruit throughout the world. So, the Master wrote a book which no one but he could have written: me. Yes, I am a book he wrote.

The earth is so far from the sun! But the distance does not stop the sun from writing on the earth, and this writing is the stones, plants, animals and humans it gives its light, warmth and life to. Like the sun, the Master wrote on me from afar. He wrote thousands and thousands of pages, and they are now all brought together in the book that is me. Then, one day, he said to me, `Now, you are ready; you can leave.'

  • To be born a second time is to be born to a new life, the life of the Kingdom of God, the life of the great Universal White Brotherhood.
Two thousand years ago, in Palestine, Jesus gave us the key to all spiritual work, when he said, Unless a man be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God. Today, the Master Omaam Mikhaël Aïvanhov interprets these words for our benefit. The water Jesus speaks of is Love; the Spirit, fire, is Wisdom, and Love and Wisdom unite to give birth to Truth which is the new life. In his commentary, the Master Omraam Mikhaël Aïvanhov shows how these three virtues of Love, Wisdom and Truth, correspond to man's psychic structure composed of heart, mind and will. Explaining that our physical bodies mirror our psychic being, he shows how Cosmic Intelligence has inscribed the secret of love in our mouths, that of wisdom in our ears and that of truth in our eyes.
This volume, which is the first of a series, sets out the essential foundations of Omraam Mikhaël Aïvanhov's Teaching and reveals the vast scope of his thought in which Holy Scripture, esoteric symbolism and the sciences of man and of nature meet and complete each other in one all-embracing synthesis.

'Laughter is a way of communicating life.'
As an authentic sage, Omraam Mikhaël Aïvanhov explains to us, among other things, why tears and laughter are important. Whatever their origin, tears release a certain inner tension. However, tears of joy and wonder are the most beneficial because they comfort us, beautify us and rejuvenate us. As for laughter, it is not always a sign of recklessness or lack of seriousness because there are living energies within it that nourish the brain.
'The sage's laugh is a laugh of freedom. For what the sage has understood has freed him from the pointless burdens of life and propelled him to regions where an eternal sun shines.
And the sage's only wish is to impart this hard-earned light to those who are with him or who come to visit him. But it takes so long for them to integrate it! The only thing therefore that the sage can communicate immediately is the joy he derives from this wisdom - the joy that fills his heart to overflowing - and his laughter is the expression of this joy, which we can also call love.'

  • Brother Roger's life, in communion with his brothers, was given over tirelessly to welcoming young people at Taizé, to stimulating Christians to reconciliation, and to travelling across the world to share the life of the very poor. It was a life given for love. This choice of texts and prayers from his writings opens a door onto the vital intuitions that inspired the founder of the Taizé Community.

Exercise the power of the mind over matter.
Omraam Mikhaël Aïvanhov has often said that by studying the Gospels, he travelled through the spiritual regions that also resided in him, thus gaining access to a kind of cosmic "library", the "great book of Nature". Here again, commenting on certain parables, he enlightens us on the many tools at our disposal to transform us through processes of spiritual alchemy.
'The Gospels can be understood and interpreted in the light of alchemical science. On the face of it, they are simply giving an account of the life of one man, Jesus, born two thousand years ago in Palestine, but while they recount the different stages of his life, from birth to death and resurrection, they are in fact also describing alchemical processes.
In spite of being an object of condemnation by the clergy, since the Middle Ages alchemy has profundly permeated Christian mysticism and esotericism. And if you study the sculptures both on the outside and inside of cathedrals such as the Notre-Dame in Paris or the Notre-Dame in Chartres, you will discover that the builders of these cathedrals possessed alchemical knowledge, to which architecture and sculpture bear ample witness.'
